HTML vs Flash: The Battle Continues!
Over the past 10 years at AYC, we've developed several "all Flash" website solutions ranging from simple web applications to complicated, deep-linking XML-driven sites. More recently, we've been consciously trying to steer clear of Adobe's Flash platform, specifically because users tend to encounter problems when browsing with a mobile device. CSS3 and HTML5 have allowed our design and development teams to circumvent most of the projects where we would normally use a Flash application.
Today, however, marks a first for our design studio; we just completed and launched a complete rebuild of a previously all Flash website. EventCentralPro.com was developed back in '06 as a stand-alone Flash application driven by our CMS via an XML feed. With the recent news about Adobe's support for its mobile platform, we advised the Event Central team that it was time to redevelop in a more mobile-friendly way.
Our design team was able to replicate 99% of the website’s functionality and maintain the user experience from the previous version. The site still maintains a very minimal amount of Flash, but it now has a hidden, mobile solution ensuring mobile users receive the same experience as their desktop counterparts.
It will be interesting to see if this starts a chain reaction among our clients whose websites are also dominated by Flash. Stay tuned!
