We were instantly intrigued by the Bernie’s backstory and impetus for opening the restaurant. We learned that Bernie was the owner’s grandmother and that she hosted a regular Sunday dinner for over 35 years. Rain or shine, large party or small, she set the table and welcomed a growing crowd of family and friends at the close of each weekend.

Hand drawn design

With such organic beginnings, we knew the design needed to evoke the heart of the project. We wanted the menus and logo to conjure that feeling of family, both welcoming and casual, intimate and understated. We went with hand drawn elements to create the logo and certain features including the utensils, food and creative words, all of which are displayed throughout the site and print materials. This, we felt, would emphasize the hand crafting that went into creating the meals, at first at Bernie’s home, and then to this day, at Bernie’s the restaurant.

We were especially enthused to help Bernie’s develop their interior, with a custom wall design. This distinguishable feature helped tie in the family touch on a grand scale. The designs took on a life of their own and were incorporated in both promotional material and signage. The logo worked perfectly with the decor and together, with the other creative elements created an enhanced design aesthetic.
