Tech Trends: What’s New in 2016?

Published:01/06/2016

Let’s recap the latest trends and what is to be expected in tech in 2016. In the tech world, 2016 will be full of surprises. Many new gadgets are to be expected. Here is a quick recap of the most awaited technologies for this year.

Oculus Rift
The Oculus Rift is the long awaited virtual reality (VR) headset. It has been available to developers for some time now, but not for the general public. Well no more- on January 6th, pre-orders for the final version of the Oculus Rift (not to be confused with the Oculus VR, a headset specifically for the latest Samsung phones) will be available. This will be a game-changer for gaming, as you are now going to be immersed in the game and not just a spectator of it. VR is closer than ever, and I am looking forward to giving the Oculus Rift a try if the final price isn’t too steep.

Final price and delivery dates still to be announced.

Self-Driving Cars
The Google self-driving car is currently in full testing mode out in California. We have all heard about it being pulled over for being too slow.  While the release of such cars is still not expected to be for a few years, testing is underway and the technology improves every day.

At this time, Google has driven over 1 million miles with self-driving cars, and we can be expect to see more and more of these on the road in the coming years.

Nintendo NX

The Nintendo Wii U, while a great console in my opinion, with a new approach to console gaming with a tactile game pad and good games, was a commercial failure. The main reason for this is the limited number of games, mostly being Nintendo IPs.

The Nintendo NX has been announced as the next generation of Nintendo home consoles. It hasn’t been presented yet, but rumors have the new console coming out in late 2016. It is most likely that the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) 2016 will feature more information about this new member to the Nintendo family.

Final price and release date still to be announced.

iPhone 7
I am not a big fan of Apple for many reasons, but let’s not get into that today. Like every year, Apple will release a new iPhone (or 2 like the last couple years), and this one is expected to be a game-changer. This new phone is expected to be the thinnest yet, but at the price of not having a 3.5mm auxiliary port. It is also expected to feature a brand new design, supposed to be a big change from the versions 6 & 6S of Apple’s flagship. Will it really be a big change from the latest versions? I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Final price still to be announced. Release in September 2016.

There is still much more to be announced for 2016, and we’ll be here to talk about it!
